How to Keep Your Drains Clear and Flowing

Simple habits that stop slow drains and blockages before they turn into an emergency call-out.

Most blocked drains are not bad luck. They are the result of a few months of small habits, and they give plenty of warning before they finally stop draining altogether. Keeping them clear is mostly about what never goes down them in the first place, plus a handful of minutes each month.

1. Keep fats and oils out of the sink entirely

Cooking fat pours as a liquid and sets as a solid somewhere down the line where it is cold. It then catches everything else that passes. Pour it into a jar, let it set, and put it in the bin — this one habit prevents more kitchen blockages than anything else on this list.

2. Strainers beat drain cleaner every time

A few pounds of mesh strainer in each sink, basin and shower catches hair, food and grit before it enters the pipe at all. Emptying one takes two seconds. It is considerably cheaper and considerably kinder to your pipework than any bottled product.

3. Hot water alone is not a flush

Running the hot tap for a few seconds moves grease further along the pipe rather than removing it. A proper monthly flush is a full kettle of very hot water poured steadily down the kitchen drain, ideally last thing at night when nothing else will be used.

If you want to add something, a handful of bicarbonate followed by vinegar and then the hot water is fine. Avoid caustic drain cleaners as routine maintenance — they damage older pipe and seals, and they do nothing a flush does not.

4. Give the bathroom drains a weekly minute

Shower and basin drains block with hair and soap scum, not grease, so they need a different habit. Lift the grate, pull out what has gathered, and run the tap hot for thirty seconds. Doing it weekly takes a minute; doing it never takes a plumber.

“A drain that has started running slow is not yet a problem. It is the only warning you are going to get before it becomes one.”

5. Listen to what a slow drain is telling you

One slow fixture is a local clog and usually clears with a plunger or a hand auger. Several slow at once means the shared line downstream is restricting, and that is a different job entirely — no amount of work at the plughole will reach it.

Gurgling from a nearby drain when you empty a sink is worth attention too. It usually means air is being pulled through a trap because the line is partly blocked, and it tends to appear well before anything stops draining.
