Why Your Water Pressure Drops, and What Fixes It

From a half-closed stopcock to a failing valve, where pressure really goes

Weak pressure is rarely the mains; it is usually one valve, one filter or one corroded run

1. The stopcock is not fully open

This is the first thing to rule out and the cheapest to fix. An internal stopcock that was closed for a repair and only turned back most of the way will throttle the whole house. Open it fully, then back it off a quarter turn so it does not seize in place.

2. A blocked aerator on one tap

If the problem is at a single outlet rather than across the house, unscrew the aerator at the tip of the spout. Grit and scale collect in that mesh and choke the flow. Soak it overnight in descaler, rinse it and refit it before assuming anything larger is wrong.

3. Limescale narrowing the pipework

In a hard water area the internal diameter of a pipe shrinks year by year as scale builds. It happens slowly enough that nobody notices until a shower feels weak, and it affects the hot side first because heat accelerates the deposit.

4. A failing pressure-reducing valve

Most homes have a valve that holds incoming pressure at a safe level. When its internal diaphragm perishes it tends to fail low, and the drop arrives across every outlet at once rather than gradually. Replacing it is a short job with an immediate result.

5. A leak between the main and the house

Water escaping on the supply side never reaches your taps, so pressure falls and the bill rises together. If the meter creeps with everything closed, the loss is underground and needs tracing before anything indoors is touched.

6. Too many outlets on one run

Pressure that collapses the moment a second tap opens is usually a sizing problem rather than a fault. An undersized run feeding a whole bathroom simply cannot supply two fixtures at once, and resizing that section solves it permanently.

“Almost every weak shower we are called to turns out to be one restricted component, not a whole house that needs repiping.”

7. A problem at the mains, not in your home

Occasionally nothing indoors is wrong. Street works, a supplier valve left part-closed, or peak demand on a shared run will all show up as poor pressure. A gauge on the outside tap tells us in minutes which side of the boundary the fault sits on.

Any one of these can account for a weak shower. Two together usually explain a whole house that has quietly lost its pressure over a year or two.
