The walls are already open, the floor is already up, and the work that would normally cost a fortune in access is suddenly almost free. The decisions that matter all have to be made before the plasterboard goes back on.

1. Decide the pipe material before demolition starts

Copper, PEX and CPVC all behave differently in a kitchen wall, and the choice affects routing, insulation and how the joints are made. Settling it early avoids the mid-job compromise where half the run is one material and half is another, joined by fittings nobody will be able to inspect later.

2. Map every fixture you might add later

A pot filler over the hob, a second sink in an island, a filtered tap, an ice maker in the fridge recess — each one needs a supply line. Roughing them in while the wall is open costs a fraction of what it costs to add one afterwards, even if you do not fit the fixture for another two years.

3. Shut-off valves are cheap now and expensive later

Every fixture should get its own isolation valve, positioned somewhere you can actually reach it without emptying a cupboard. It adds very little to the bill during a repipe and it means a future leak affects one tap rather than the whole house.

The same applies to the branch feeding the kitchen as a whole. One accessible valve on that line turns a future repair from a whole-day job with the mains off into an afternoon.

4. Sequence the trades so nothing gets buried

Plumbing goes in before electrics where the two compete for the same joist space, and both go in before insulation and boarding. Getting that order wrong is how supply lines end up notched through structural timber or run somewhere the inspector will not sign off.

“The expensive part of a repipe is never the pipe. It is the plaster, the tiling and the cabinetry you have to take apart to reach it — which is why doing it during a remodel is such good value.”

5. Budget for the inspection, not just the materials

Most areas require a rough-in inspection before anything is covered up, and a final inspection once the fixtures are connected. Both take time to schedule, and a failed rough-in means the boarding waits.

Build that into the programme from the start. A week of slack in the schedule costs nothing; discovering you need it after the plasterer is booked costs a great deal.

Repiping is far cheaper while the walls are already open.
