The challenge<\/h2>

The journal needed a recognisable identity and a flexible digital framework for ideas, observations and visual stories of different lengths.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

The approach<\/h2>

We connected an expressive editorial identity with clear typography and modular page layouts. Reusable content patterns give short updates and longer features the same underlying visual rhythm.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Design development<\/h2>

The editorial identity explores how a journal can have a consistent voice while giving each story its own pace. Expressive headings are balanced with a quieter reading style, and image captions provide context without competing with the main text. The proposed system accommodates short observations, image-led entries and longer features through a shared set of typographic rules. Variation comes from the relationship between type, photography and whitespace rather than from a new layout language for every article.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

The digital experience<\/h2>

The publishing concept distinguishes browsing from reading. An index would introduce stories through titles, categories and brief summaries, while article pages would reduce distractions and give the text a comfortable measure. Modular image and text patterns would support different story lengths within the same framework. A CMS would keep editorial metadata and article content together, helping new entries inherit the visual rhythm of the journal. Mobile layouts would maintain clear headings, readable text and space around images and captions.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Scope & deliverables<\/h2>

Concept scope: editorial identity direction, type hierarchy, story index, article template, modular publishing patterns and CMS model. Margin Notes is a fictional portfolio study intended to demonstrate the publishing system, rather than a live journal with reported audience figures.<\/p><\/div><\/div>
