I’d highlight important sentences, go through my notes again, and convince myself that familiarity meant understanding. It felt productive, but most of what I read disappeared surprisingly quickly.

The approach that changed things was much less comfortable: close the material and try to remember it. Instead of asking whether something looked familiar, I asked whether I could explain it without looking. That small change exposed exactly what I didn’t understand.

Key points:

Rereading isn’t the same as remembering.

Test yourself before looking at your notes.

Use spaced repetition for important ideas.

Mistakes reveal what needs more work.

Focus on retrieval, not familiarity.

Change the structure first

I learned that most weak writing doesn’t need better words first. It needs better thinking. Moving a paragraph, removing an idea, or changing the order of an argument can improve a piece more than an hour of polishing sentences.

My revision process therefore starts at the largest possible level. I look at the main idea, the order of the sections, and whether every part is actually earning its place. If something feels confusing, I try to fix the thinking before touching the wording.

Only after the structure works do I start working line by line. This prevents me from spending twenty minutes making a beautiful sentence that eventually gets deleted.

Edit for the reader

The final question I ask is simple: where would someone reading this get lost, bored, or stop caring? That question changes revision from correcting mistakes into improving the experience.

I remove sentences that repeat something the reader already understands. I replace vague explanations with concrete ones and cut introductions that take too long to reach the point.

School taught me that revision meant making a paper technically correct. Experience taught me that revision is really about making an idea easier to understand, remember, and care about.

[3

post-102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-learning
["GET
