I used to write down a few talking points, turn on the camera, and trust myself to find the words. Sometimes it worked. More often, I ended up with a lot of footage and very little structure.

Writing changed that. When I treat a video like an essay, I have to figure out what I’m actually trying to say before worrying about how it will look. The opening needs a reason to keep watching, every section needs a purpose, and the ending needs to leave the viewer with something worth remembering.

Key points:

Writing clarifies the idea before filming.

A strong opening gives the video direction.

Every section should have a purpose.

Scripts reduce repetition and unnecessary footage.

Structure creates more room for creative delivery.

Write for the ear

A script isn’t an essay copied onto a teleprompter. Writing for video means thinking about rhythm, pauses, images, emphasis, and the amount of information a person can process while watching.

I read everything out loud before filming. Sentences that look perfectly fine on a screen can suddenly feel awkward when spoken.

The best lines usually become shorter. The transitions become clearer. And anything that sounds like something nobody would actually say gets rewritten until it sounds human.

Cut what doesn’t matter

The final stage is subtraction. Once the script works, I look for anything that doesn’t make the argument clearer, the story more interesting, or the experience more enjoyable.

This doesn’t mean every sentence has to sound perfect. In fact, I usually write more than I plan to say. The script gives me a structure that I can loosen once the camera is running. It helps me remove repetition, find the strongest examples, and notice when an idea isn’t developed enough.

A good script isn’t a cage for creativity. It’s a foundation for it. Once the thinking is clear, I have more freedom to focus on delivery, visuals, pacing, and the small spontaneous moments that make a video feel human.

Structure first, camera last.
