How to read a job advert properly

What the phrases really mean, and the three things worth checking before you apply.

Read the requirements as a range

Most job adverts list an ideal candidate who does not exist. If you meet around two thirds of the requirements and the core ones, apply.

Look for the salary and the manager

A published salary and a named hiring manager are good signs. They suggest the role is real, funded and properly scoped.

Check how old it is

An advert that has been up for months may be hard to fill for a reason. Ask your recruiter what is behind it.
