Notary Disclaimer

Last updated: Oct 5, 2026

A notary public verifies identity and witnesses signatures. A notary is not an attorney and cannot give legal advice.

Not an attorney

I am not an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois, and I may not give legal advice or accept fees for legal advice.

What a notary does

A notary confirms the identity of each signer, confirms they are signing willingly, and records the act in an official journal.

What a notary cannot do

A notary cannot draft legal documents, explain their legal effect, or choose which form you should use.

Identification

Every signer must present a current government photo ID. We may refuse a notarization if identity or willingness cannot be confirmed.

Commission

Notarial acts are performed under a State of Illinois commission, backed by a $5,000 surety bond and errors and omissions insurance.
