Rooftop unit replacement
A 19-year-old rooftop AC failed during a July heatwave. We priced repair against replacement, the owners chose replacement, and a high-efficiency unit was cooling the building two days later.
Duration
2 days
Trades
Heating & cooling
Warranty
10 years parts

The problem
The rooftop unit stopped cooling on the hottest week of the year. The building was sitting above 30°C inside by mid-afternoon.
What we found
The compressor had failed and the unit was 19 years old, running on a refrigerant that is no longer produced. A compressor swap was possible, but expensive for equipment near the end of its life.
What we did
- Gave the owners a written repair quote and a written replacement quote, side by side
- Arranged the crane lift and permit once they chose replacement
- Installed a high-efficiency unit and new curb adapter
- Sealed and tested the ductwork connections on the roof
The result
The building was cool again within 48 hours of approval. The new unit uses noticeably less power, and the owners have a 10-year parts warranty instead of an ageing system.
From the homeowner
They showed us repair versus replace with real numbers and didn't push the expensive option. We picked replacement because the math made sense.
