Sewage cleanup

A sewage backup needs a focused cleanup plan. We assess the affected spaces and coordinate removal, cleaning, and restoration.

Overview

What Sewage cleanup work involves.

A sewage backup is a contamination event, not a spill. Category 3 water carries bacteria and viruses, which changes everything about how the work is done — protective equipment, containment, and disposal of porous material rather than cleaning it.

We assess the category and extent, contain the area, extract the contaminated water, remove what cannot be decontaminated, then clean, disinfect and dry the structure before any rebuilding starts. This is not a job to start yourself and hand over halfway.

Pro tip

Switch the HVAC off. Running it draws contaminated air through the ductwork and spreads the problem into rooms the water never reached.

Our process

How the work runs.

Assess and contain

Identify the category of water, isolate the affected area, and keep the contamination from spreading further into the property.

Extract and remove

Contaminated water out, and porous materials that cannot be decontaminated removed and disposed of properly.

Clean and disinfect

Hard surfaces cleaned, disinfected and treated, with attention to everything the water reached rather than only what is visible.

Dry and repair

The structure dried to target, then rebuilt — flooring, drywall and finishes returned.

Insurance

Working with your insurer.

Sewer and drain backup is commonly excluded from the base policy and added by endorsement — often with a modest limit. Many owners find out at claim time that they do not have it. It is worth checking your schedule before you need it.

Where coverage exists, carriers generally expect professional remediation and documentation of what was disposed of. We record the category of water, the affected area and the disposal, because contaminated material that was thrown away without evidence is difficult to claim for.

Questions, answered

Before you call.

The things people ask us most about this service.

Can I clean it up myself?

We would strongly advise not. Category 3 water carries pathogens, and the risk is not only what you touch but what becomes airborne. If you have already started, stop, keep the area closed off and let someone with the right protection finish it.

What has to be thrown away?

Generally anything porous the water reached — carpet and padding, particleboard, insulation, most upholstered items. Hard, non-porous surfaces can usually be cleaned and disinfected. We will show you the line rather than clearing the room.

How long before the space is safe again?

Cleaning and disinfection are typically a day or two for a contained area. Drying takes longer, and the space should stay closed off until readings and disinfection are both complete.

What if it happened in a rental?

Tell your landlord or property manager immediately and keep everyone out of the area. We can work for whoever instructs us — owner, manager or tenant — though responsibility for the cost normally sits with the property owner.

Will the smell go away?

Yes, once the contaminated material is out and the area is disinfected and properly dried. Odor that lingers afterwards almost always means something porous was left in place, or the structure was closed up before it was dry.

Do not clean this yourself.

Protective equipment, containment and proper disposal are not optional with contaminated water. Keep people and pets out of the area and call us.
